The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of International Organizational Affairs (IO) is the federal government’s main liaison with the United Nations. Therefore, IO requires efficient and accessible systems for disseminating information internationally, especially over the Internet. The IO Careers Website serves as a clearinghouse for international job vacancy announcements from the United Nations and related organizations. Originally a SharePoint implementation, the IO Careers website was in need of an upgrade in order to support the ever-increasing user base. The relational nature of matching jobs to users proved to be a job for a native SQL Server implementation.
Buchanan & Edwards was assigned to design, develop, and deploy a database-backed web application for the IO. The new IO Careers Website provides advanced search and subscription capabilities that allow users to search jobs by area, profession, grade, and position. In addition, the website supports bi-monthly email notifications of jobs matching users’ saved search criteria, totaling about 500,000 emails sent to date.
The entire IO Careers application and database is now hosted in Microsoft Azure under a state.gov domain. It continues to deliver outstanding service to a growing user base and gives the administrative staff easy access for new job entries and reporting. The website is secured with an SSL certificate from VeriSign, certified and accredited (C&A) for public use by the Department of State.
